What Does Hiland Believe?

I had seven heart attacks between November 10th and 11th 20001. The physicians said that I had been having heart attacks for at least 5 years and more probably 10 years.  Under the skilled hands of the cardiology department at St. Peter’s Hospital, Albany NY, and my friend Dr. John Bennett, I survived complicated open-heart surgery.

Congestive heart failure occurred on February 6, 2007.  With the help of friends Rob and Toni Taylor and Dr. Mehmet Oz, I was accepted as a heart transplant candidate at Columbia Presbyterian in October 2007.

I transferred to Tampa General Hospital in February 2009.  I received a 25-year old heart on November 2, 2009.  During the recovery, my life was saved twice. The first was by Neurosurgeon supreme Dr. David Semenoff of Albany Medical Center and the second time by Cardiologist Dr. Edward Philbin and Pulmonologist Dr. Mark Napier.

The recovery has been difficult.

I am not the best scorekeeper but I think that I have used all my nine lives.  Chances are good that there will not be a tenth.

During the wait and in recovery, I prayed for guidance. I meditated and stretched for hours. I asked to be shown “the way.” Someone told me to look back. I did. I did not like what I saw. My belief system was badly flawed.

I had not worshipped in so long.  I was adrift in every possible way. With the help of a talented and patient psychologist and more prayer than at any time in my life and with daily prayers from friends in far away places, I found ground.

I constructed a new belief system and found a new me.

This is not to suggest that I have any answers that are any better than anyone else’s. I became interested in things that had never appealed to me. On this blog, I hope we can exchange ideas about a wide range of topics.

First, you may want to know where I stand on a few topics.  If that doesn’t scare you away, welcome aboard.

I believe that finite beings cannot comprehend infinite powers.  I believe in God The Father, God The Son and God The Holy Ghost. I believe people should respect the religions of others.

The United States of America

I believe in the United States of America when it is a democracy. I believe in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I believe in the Constitution.  I fear the United States has lost its way.  We no longer have government for the people or by the people.  Self-interest has damaged our form of governance. I believe the Washington dynamic pits We the People against We the Few. I believe in checks and balances. I believe money has corrupted our politics and our Capitol.

I believe everyone has the capacity to learn. I believe the study of Latin is meritorious. I believe in sentence structure. I believe in the power of the written word. I believe television is counter to communication. I believe we talk too much and do not listen enough. I believe we do not say “thank you” enough. I do not relate to, “Have a good one.”

I believe in the human spirit. I believe in survival. I believe we have the ability to repair ourselves. I believe belief systems need to be seriously re-visited occasionally. I believe extremism is dangerous and explosive. I believe that those who exercise, meditate and pray radiate the joy of life.

I believe in the equality of the sexes.  I believe the recession has impacted society by creating a caste system.  I believe there exists a double or triple standard in America.

I believe our children are in jeopardy.  I believe our children are too often left to raise themselves. I believe we do not do enough to protect our children in the home, in school, or in the face of stalkers.  I believe our children have access to contraband in the home, in the school, in the street and in every medicine cabinet. I believe children do not need a computer to be entertained. I believe children can become excited by a museum, a gallery, by aquariums and the like. I believe children who bully should be compelled to attend after school counseling every other day in after school programs.

I believe faculty should be reviewed twice a year. I believe schools at all levels should be overly protective of predators. I believe students should be instructed how to respond to bullies and predators. I believe schools should encourage reporting of abuse at home, at school or wherever children go.

I believe responsible capitalism is an honorable pursuit.

I believe there are people who will never like America.

I believe in artistic creation in any form from any source.

I believe Laura Hillenbrand is a gifted writer and storytelling abilities equal to John O’Hara.

I believe marriage is hard work that works for some and not for others.

I believe love has many stages.

I believe in the magic of sport. I believe Tim Tebow and Jeremy Lin are brave.

I believe tennis players are the best athletes in the world. I believe in UNC basketball, Notre Dame football and baseball, baseball, baseball.

I believe in hydroponic flowers. I believe in the purity prophyta roses, all orchids and exotics from Hawaii. I believe in the color and fragrance of an English garden.

I believe in casting for fresh water bass with an open reel and live bait. I believe in fly-fishing for everything. I believe trout can be caught by hand fishing.

I believe medical marijuana should be legalized.

I believe in open innovation.

I believe in miracles. How about you?
